From Which Door Are You Observing The World?

Updated: Oct 24, 2024

In life, we all stand before two doors in our minds. One is marked “Abundance,” and the other is marked “Scarcity.” The door you choose to open will shape how you see the world, how you experience life, and what you ultimately attract into your reality. The question is: which door are you looking through?

I had a lightbulb moment that changed everything for me, when I realized that two people can experience the same situation and walk away with completely different conclusions, all based on the door they chose to open in their minds. This insight became clear when I compared two stories—each reflecting a different mindset and each leading to entirely different outcomes.

Michelle’s Story: Choosing the Door of Abundance

Michelle shared a story of a decision she made, that changed her life forever. When she was 21, she had her first chance to visit Paris. At the time, she was broke, working in her family’s business without pay and her life was mediocre per her own words.  One day, while running errands, she was supposed to head left to the bank, something inside urged her to go right. On the right was a travel agency, advertising a trip to Paris for $2,000—a price that was well beyond her means.

But instead of seeing this as a barrier, Michelle saw it as an opportunity. She decided right there, staring at the map of France, that she was going to make it happen. She declared her intention to go to Paris and, within a few weeks, found a way to gather enough money for the trip. Without any clear plan or place to stay, she trusted her intuition and took the leap.

Paris changed everything for her. It wasn't just about the city; it was about what the trip represented—possibility, adventure, and saying "yes" to her desires. When she returned, people asked her what she had learned from her experience. Her response was simple but profound: “Anything is possible.” She carried that mantra with her and built a successful business on the foundation of possibility. Paris became the birthplace of the version of Michelle who would go on to achieve incredible things. She didn’t wait to create a perfect life before living her dreams; she pursued her dreams and, in the process, became the version of her that could create the life that she wanted.

My Story: Getting Stuck Behind the Door of Scarcity

The first time I went to Perth, Western Australia, everything about the place felt like magic to me. The weather was perfect, the beaches were stunning, and the laid-back lifestyle made me feel more alive than I had in years. Every part of me wanted to stay, to make a life there. Yet, despite feeling that pull, I didn’t believe it was possible.

Contrary, to Michelle I had everything I needed for that trip because I was working and I had my bestie living over there —free accommodation and enough pocket money. I loved my stay, the city vibes, all my senses where alive, and my desire was to live in such a beautiful city where I could access the beach easily. But my mind kept finding reasons why moving there wasn’t realistic. Instead of seeing the possibilities, I saw the limitations. I convinced myself that living in Western Australia was out of reach for someone like me because there were too many barriers. I let my desire slip through my fingers because I was looking at life through the door of scarcity, where opportunities appear humongous, and dreams seem unreachable.

The Power of Perspective: Changing Your Mindset Changes Everything

Reflecting upon these two stories, I realized the difference between Michelle’s experience and mine wasn’t about circumstances; it was about mindset. Michelle chose the door of abundance, and her world expanded. I chose the door of scarcity, and my world shrank.

When I returned from that trip, if people had asked me what I learned, my answer would have "nothing I truly desire is possible for me" and during my stay I constantly felt both joy and despair. My time in Perth highlighted the life I deeply wanted but believed was out of reach. In the two following years, I went back repeatedly, felt the same longing, and each time I returned to Malaysia, my life spiraled out of control. For years, I was heartbroken—chasing a dream with the wrong energy, and when things didn’t work out, I was left devastated.

Our mind constantly seeks evidence to support our way of thinking. We must remember that the world reflects our beliefs. If you’re constantly looking at what’s lacking, all you will see is lack, even if you're surrounded by unclaimed acres of diamonds. But if you dare to look through the door of abundance, even if your environment does not reflect that yet, you will find opportunities where you thought there were none, and possibilities where you once saw obstacles.

Step Into Your Power: Open the Door to Abundance and Throw Away the Key

You have the power to change your life by simply changing the door you choose to open. Decide today to step into the door of abundance, throw away the key and shut the door of scarcity for good. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Don’t wait until you have all the answers. Listen to the desires in your heart and claim them boldly.

Michelle’s story teaches us that when we follow our intuition and say “yes” to our deepest desires, we activate a version of ourselves that is inspired, powerful, and alive. And when we live from that place, we open ourselves up to a world where anything is possible.

So, ask yourself: From which door are you observing the world? Choose the door of abundance and let your desires guide you.

With all my heart,

Salima
